Mentioned in this story
Tata Motors is developing a new electric SUV, codenamed Kuno, that could reach showrooms in 2027-28. The car would be around 4.3 metres long and aimed at the MG Windsor EV, one of India's best-selling electric passenger vehicles.
The Kuno would be placed in Tata's electric lineup between the next-generation Nexon EV and the Sierra EV. Sanand in Gujarat could handle production, with an annual capacity of roughly 80,000 to 1 lakh units. Tata Motors has not confirmed these figures.
Platform and drive options
The Kuno is expected to use Tata's Acti.ev electric architecture. The platform is designed to support several drive setups, including front-wheel, rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. The battery placement frees up floor space in the cabin, which matters for a car of this size.
Tata has a wider electric plan. At its Investor Day earlier this year, the company said it would expand its electric lineup from six current models to 10 by the end of FY2031. The Kuno would fill a gap in that range, alongside the Safari EV and Avinya, which are already in the pipeline.
For buyers, a car of this size on a dedicated electric platform could offer more interior room than smaller EVs. Its price has not been announced.
Tata Motors has not publicly confirmed the Kuno, its launch timing, its specifications or its price. Until the company makes an announcement, the details remain unofficial.
