idly is free to read. It earns from commission links on some products and from clearly labelled sponsored placements. Neither ever decides what idly covers.
Commission links
When a story mentions something you can buy, watch, book or play, idly may link to where you can get it. Some of those links are commission links: if you buy through one, the shop pays idly a small commission. You pay the same price.
- Every commission link is marked where it appears, with idly may earn a commission next to the link or at the top of the list it's in. Screen readers hear “commission link”.
- Links that earn nothing say Direct link, no commission, so you can tell them apart.
- As an Amazon Associate, idly earns from qualifying purchases. idly may also use affiliate networks, such as Cuelinks, for other shops.
- Prices are shown only with the date they were checked. The shop sets the final price and is responsible for what it sells you.
- Commission links carry
rel="sponsored"for search engines. - When you click one, idly counts the click (which link, where on the page, the day) without any ID or IP address. The shop may set its own cookie; see Cookies.
Sponsored placements
- Paid placements always carry Sponsored or Presented by … with the sponsor's name, visible before you interact with them.
- They never appear inside the day's eight-story edition or next to the “worth your time” vote, and never look like an idly story without the label.
- idly's own promotions are labelled Advertisement.
- No ad-network scripts, tracking pixels or targeted ads. Sponsored placements are the same for everyone.
Press releases, free products and creators
- A story based mainly on a press release or brand announcement is marked PR-supplied.
- If idly is given a product, a trip or access for free, the story says so. Free products never buy coverage or a favourable review.
- Paid or gifted posts on idly's social media accounts are labelled upfront (for example “Ad”, “Sponsored” or “Collaboration”), in line with the ASCI Code.
- Creator videos and posts shown on idly are chosen by editors. Creators don't pay to appear, and idly doesn't pay them.
What money never changes
Commissions and sponsors have no say in what idly covers, what a story says, or how stories are ranked. Stories are ranked by how important and well-sourced they are and by whether readers found them worth their time, never by clicks or commissions. See the editorial policy.
