Privacy
No account and no name. Most of what idly knows about you stays on your device, and the rest sits under a random ID you can delete.
Draft
On your device
These stay in your browser and are never sent to idly:
- Your streak and active days, and today's quiz answers
- Saved stories and your reading history (the last 50 stories)
- Recent searches, your theme, and whether you've dismissed a tip
- A copy of today's edition for reading offline
Clearing your browser's site data removes them. So does Delete my data in Your idly.
Under an anonymous ID
To pick five of your eight daily stories, idly creates a random ID on your device. With it, idly records which stories you open and finish, your “worth it” votes, stories you share or ask for less of, the topics you pick and the words you mute. That's all: no name, no email, no location.
For your reading level (Easy, Standard or Expert), idly also keeps the level you chose, which hard terms you tap and your reading pace: words per minute on your last 10 finished stories, as numbers only. It uses them only to suggest a level once; it never changes your level by itself.
- Reading signals are deleted after 90 days.
- An ID that hasn't been used for 180 days is deleted with everything under it.
- Turn personalisation off from the menu and nothing about your reading is sent. Use Delete my data in Your idly to remove it all at once.
Readers aged 18 and over
Personalisation is for readers aged 18 and over. idly isn't made for children and doesn't market itself to them. idly will never ask your age and never tries to work it out from your reading; reading levels describe how you like to read, not who you are. If you're under 18, please keep personalisation off (from the menu): stories, Everyone's top 5 and search all work without it.
Ask idly
Ask idly sends your question and the last few turns of the conversation, never your ID. Questions are kept for 30 days to fix wrong answers, then deleted.
Email and notifications
Both are opt-in. The daily email needs your address and a click on the confirmation link; every email has a one-tap unsubscribe. Notifications need your browser's permission; turn them off in Your idly or your browser settings. idly never shares or sells your email address.
Advertising and analytics
At launch, idly loads no ad-network or third-party tracking scripts. Ads are idly's own, shown the same to everyone. If that changes, this page changes first, and you'll be asked before anything that tracks you is switched on.
