Editorial policy
What idly publishes, how, and the lines it doesn't cross. These standards follow the Code of Ethics for digital news publishers in India's IT Rules, 2021.
What idly is
idly is a news digest. It doesn't do original reporting or act as the source of a claim: it groups what established outlets have published about the same event, summarises it in its own words, and links every original so you can read them in full. Step by step, that is on How idly works.
The Code of Ethics we follow
The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 ask digital news publishers to follow the Norms of Journalistic Conduct of the Press Council of India and the Programme Code under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, and never to publish content prohibited by law. idly applies them like this.
Accuracy and fairness
- Summaries say only what the linked reports say. idly adds no facts of its own, and automatic checks make sure no number appears that isn't in the sources.
- Where outlets disagree, the story says so. Where something isn't known yet, the story says that too.
- Opinion, analysis and reported fact are kept apart and labelled.
Corrections
- When we get something wrong, we fix it promptly and say what changed on the corrections log, which keeps the record even if a story is later removed.
- Report an error with the correction form or to corrections@idly.world.
Right of reply
If a story is about you or your organisation and you think it is unfair or incomplete, tell us. Where your response is relevant, we add it to the story, or link to where you published it, and note the update. Write to corrections@idly.world or the grievance officer.
Allegations, crime and courts
- Any story touching a criminal allegation, a court case, communal or religious conflict, violence, disasters, children or a claim about a person's private life is held off the site until an editor has read it. If the automatic check can't decide, the story is held.
- An accusation is reported as an accusation, attributed to who made it, with the response of the accused where the reports carry one. idly never presents an allegation as fact.
- idly doesn't name survivors of sexual offences, or children in crime, abuse or court stories, and doesn't publish anything a court has restrained.
- Stories about suicide follow responsible-reporting practice: no method, no sensational headlines, and where help is relevant, where to find it.
Privacy and dignity
We report on people's public roles and actions. Private lives are covered only where there is a clear public interest and established outlets have already reported it, and always by an editor's decision.
Communal harmony and the law
idly doesn't publish content that is obscene, defamatory, incites violence or hatred against a group, threatens the security of India or public order, or is otherwise prohibited by Indian law. Coverage of communal tension sticks to verified facts, without inflammatory language or images.
How idly uses AI
- AI writes the first draft of each summary, only from the linked reports. It doesn't browse the web, interview anyone or decide what's true on its own.
- Every draft goes through automatic checks for originality, numbers and sensitive topics before anyone sees it. Sensitive drafts wait for an editor.
- Each story shows who checked it: the editor who approved it, or the desk when it went live after passing every check.
- Easy and Expert versions, and Ask idly answers, are also written with AI from idly's own stories, and say so.
- idly doesn't use AI to create realistic images or video of real people or events.
Sources and images
- Stories are built from established news outlets and official sources, and list every report used, with links.
- Summaries are in idly's own words: no run of nine or more words is copied from a source, except quotes, which are marked and attributed.
- Images come from press kits and official media, or from the source with a credit. When an image's owner asks, we replace or remove it.
Paid content stays separate
- Advertisers and sponsors never decide what idly covers, how a story is written or how it is ranked.
- Sponsored placements are always labelled Sponsored or Presented by, and never appear inside the edition or next to the “worth your time” vote.
- Commission links are marked where they appear. See Disclosures.
Lines we don't cross
- No blind items or anonymous gossip
- No allegation presented as fact
- No paid story without a label
- No ranking stories by clicks or outrage
- No AI-made images of real events
- No naming of survivors or children in crime stories
Complaints about content
Complaints under the IT Rules go to our grievance officer, who acknowledges within 24 hours and decides within 15days. If a story is taken down, it is removed from idly and from idly's social media posts.
