OpenAI has added GIF creation to ChatGPT, letting users make animated GIFs from a written prompt or a photo they upload. The change was reported on 4 November 2026.

Until now, ChatGPT could not produce a GIF in a single step. The new feature rolls out alongside OpenAI's Images 2.6 model. Once a GIF is made, users can change how fast it plays, view and edit it frame by frame, and share it with others.

OpenAI shared an example in which a user types, "can you make a gif of a cat dancing?" ChatGPT then returns an animated GIF of the cat. The user can then adjust the playback speed or step through the individual frames.

The same process works with a photo. A user uploads an image and asks ChatGPT to animate it, and the chatbot turns it into a GIF.

OpenAI has said the Images 2.6 update also brings other changes. Details of those changes have not been given.

It is not yet known how many users will get access first, whether the feature will be free, or when it will reach every account. Users who want to try it should check the app for the option to create GIFs as the update rolls out.
