Google changes search for students, adds guided learning amid AI concerns
Parents and educators worry AI Overviews give students easy answers and leave them less capable.
Key facts
Story- Google says it is updating its search tools to be better for learning, with step-by-step guided help.
- Google is tying AI Overviews to traditional search, drawing anger from some parents and educators.
- Critics worry machine-generated answers are leaving children less capable at schoolwork.
Google announced changes to its search products so they work better as learning aids. The company plans to offer step-by-step guided help through problems, so students do not simply get quick answers to their schoolwork.
The changes come as Google ties its AI Overviews, the machine-generated summaries shown at the top of search results, more closely with traditional search. Parents and educators have objected. They worry that easy, automated answers are leaving children less capable.
Some schools are now searching for ways to limit the feature. Blocking students from searching at schools that reject AI is among the possibilities being discussed. How many schools are considering this, or whether any have acted on it, is not known.
Google has not given details of how the guided learning feature will work or when it will be available. It is also not known whether the update will apply to all users or only to students.
AI Overviews have drawn criticism since they were rolled out in search results. Critics say they can present answers without the reader needing to look through the original sources, which may be a problem for students doing homework and research.
What happens next is not yet clear. Google has not said whether the changes will be tested first, and it is not known how schools will respond to the update.
