Mercedes delays US production of GLC SUV to May 2030
The German carmaker's best-selling crossover will keep facing US import tariffs for longer than planned.
Key facts
Story- Mercedes-Benz will not build the GLC in the US until May 2030, sources say.
- The delay pushes back local output planned for 2027 at its Vance, Alabama plant.
- Imported GLC models will remain exposed to US import tariffs in the meantime.
Mercedes-Benz has pushed back the start of GLC production at its Vance, Alabama plant to May 2030. The German carmaker had earlier planned to begin building the crossover locally in 2027.
The delay means the GLC, one of Mercedes' most important models, will continue to be imported into the United States for several more years. Imported vehicles face US import tariffs, which add to their cost. The model will not be made in the US until its next generation arrives.
Local assembly was expected to reduce the exposure of the model to tariffs on imported cars. With the start date moved back by more than three years, that protection will not arrive during the current model cycle.
It is not yet known whether the delay was caused by a specific factor, or whether Mercedes has announced a new investment plan for the Alabama site. It is also not known how the change will affect the price of the GLC in the US.
Mercedes has not yet given further details of the revised schedule, and it is not known whether the date could change again.
