Mentioned in this story
Samsung has rolled out an updated sleep apnoea detection feature across its Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring lineups. The company's announcement comes after the United States Food and Drug Administration approved the feature in July.
The update was also approved by South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. This makes Samsung the first manufacturer globally to offer regulator-approved sleep apnoea detection on both devices.
Sleep apnoea is a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. The feature is designed to detect signs of it while the wearer sleeps. Samsung has not said the detection accuracy or the number of users who have access so far.
The FDA approval in July was the step that allowed Samsung to bring the feature to market in the United States. The later South Korean approval extended it to a second national regulator. Samsung's previous version of the feature was not cleared in the same way.
It is not yet known whether the feature will be available in India or on which models and software versions. Buyers considering a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring should check Samsung's India website or the phone app for the latest feature list before buying.
What is not yet known is the timeline for other markets, including India. Samsung has not said when, or whether, the feature will reach other countries.
