India's Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale have become the first all-Indian women's pair to reach a final at the main level of the WTA Tour in doubles. They achieved the feat at the Chennai Open on Saturday, 7 November.
The pair beat second seeds Weronika Falkowska and Alana Smith 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 in the semi-final. They lost the second set but recovered to win the match-deciding super tie-break, which is played to 10 points in place of a third set.
The final will be against Switzerland's Naima Karamoko and Simona Waltert. The Adkar-Bhosale pair now have a chance to win a main-tour title, something no all-Indian women's pair has done before.
The result is a milestone for Indian women's tennis in doubles, a discipline where Indian players have often competed at lower levels of the tour. A place in a main-tour final gives the pair wider exposure and points on the rankings.
The Chennai Open is the first main-tour event of its kind staged in India in this format.
The final is scheduled to follow the semi-finals. Match time has not been announced.
