Mentioned in this story
Munna Bhai 3 has taken a step forward, with director Rajkumar Hirani bringing Farhad Samji on to write the screenplay. The next instalment of the Munna Bhai series is now in the works, and filming is planned to begin in 2027.
Samji is expected to complete the script soon. Reports on the film say Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi are likely to return to their roles, but neither has been formally announced in the material available so far. More details, including the cast, will follow once the writing is finished.
A franchise returns
Hirani first confirmed in June 2026 that the film would go ahead, saying the time had finally come. The announcement came after years of fan interest in a third Munna Bhai film. Samji has a link to the series already, having written the opening lines for the song M Bole To.
The Munna Bhai films are among the best-known comedies in Hindi cinema, and their return has drawn strong interest from fans. The earlier films starred Dutt as Munna, a Mumbai gangster who turns to Gandhian ideas.
What is not yet known
The production has not yet said when the script will be complete or when shooting will start in detail. It is also unclear whether the film will have a release window beyond the 2027 filming target.
